Introduction
Teaching the Native American Studies Model Curriculum (NASMC) is essential to providing a complete, accurate, and inclusive education in California. For generations, traditional K–12 curricula have often misrepresented, or omitted Native American histories and perspectives. The NASMC helps restore historical accuracy, honors the sovereignty and contemporary lives of Native peoples, and centers Indigenous voices in the classroom. This work not only affirms Native students’ identities and lived experiences, but also fosters cultural humility, empathy, and critical thinking for all students, preparing them to navigate an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.
We recognize that teaching Native American Studies can feel overwhelming, especially for educators concerned about saying the wrong thing, lacking background knowledge, or navigating complex histories. That’s why the NASMC offers a wide range of professional development resources designed to support and guide you. Whether you’re just beginning or deepening your understanding, we encourage you to start with foundational materials like the revised History of Native California video and the 7 Essential Understandings. These resources build the cultural and historical context needed to teach with sensitivity and accuracy.
You don’t have to redesign your entire curriculum overnight. Start small by integrating one lesson, one unit, or one Indigenous author and build over time. The NASMC provides standards-aligned, adaptable lessons, essential understandings, learning outcomes, and templates to support gradual integration across all content areas and grade levels.
Teaching the NASMC is a journey. Use this curriculum as an opportunity to model what learning looks like for students, the enthusiasm and thoughtful reflection of growing everyday. By modeling openness, humility, and respect for diverse perspectives, educators foster classrooms grounded in curiosity, truth, and justice. This professional learning space is here to help you grow your confidence, deepen your understanding, and teach Native American Studies with integrity and care.
