Area of Study 4: Vietnamese Resettlement and Community Building
Vietnamese Resettlement and Community Building: 1975-present
From the evacuees of 1975, to subsequent groups of refugees and immigrants who came later, Vietnamese Americans have come to transform many aspects of American society. This paper traces Vietnamese American experiences of resettlement and provides historical context for the resettlement process. It covers important policies and legislation, including the 1980 Refugee Act, the Orderly Departure Program, and the United States dispersal policy that attempted to spread Vietnamese arrivals across America.
The Politics of Intergenerational Differences: Bridging and Healing
The Vietnamese American Experiences Model Curriculum (VAEMC) includes lessons exploring various aspects of Vietnamese American history and culture, illuminating factors that influence Intergenerational Political Dissonance within the Vietnamese community. By examining political perspectives and partisan identification, educators and students consider how historical events, cultural values, and educational experiences shape political attitudes among Vietnamese Americans across generations.
