Vietnamese American Experiences: Areas of Study

An area of study includes lessons that are connected by chronology and theme. Teachers can teach the lessons located in an area of study as part of a unit by adding additional lessons to build student coherence if needed. Each area of study includes a narrative with a content overview to explain historical background and key concepts for classroom teachers and students.

Framing the Vietnamese American Experiences Model Curriculum

This area of study introduces students to Vietnamese American Experiences. Students learn about the importance of Vietnamese American Identities. This area of study also explores how Vietnam, the Vietnam War, and Vietnamese people were represented during and after the war.

Social and Political Transformations in 20th Century Vietnam

This area of study analyzes society in Vietnam during the colonial period and the Republic of Vietnam to serve as a historical foundation for understanding Vietnamese American culture, politics, ideologies, identity, and nation before 1975.

Vietnamese Departures and Transit

This area of study delves into the many ways refugees of various backgrounds departed from Vietnam pre-and-post the Fall of Saigon in 1975 as well as their transit via air, sea, and land. Lesson plans will explore life, policies, and hardships in post-war Vietnam under the new communist government, and how that context impacted the decision for various groups to leave Vietnam.

Vietnamese Resettlement and Community Building

This area of study examines the Vietnamese community building in the United States after 1975. Students will explore the development of Vietnamese ethnic enclaves, political engagement and discuss issues of identity, intergenerational differences, mental health, and discrimination.
