Cambodian American Studies: Areas of Study

An area of study includes lessons that are connected by chronology and theme. Teachers can teach the lessons located in an area of study as part of a unit by adding additional lessons to build student coherence if needed. Each area of study includes a narrative with a content overview to explain historical background and key concepts for classroom teachers and students.

Introduction to Cambodian History

This area of study offers an examination through the historical context of Cambodia, the Khmer Empire, and the Angkor era. Lesson plans introduce students to the geography, the demography, and the history of the Empire. Lesson plans include topics covering colonization, war, and political systems. In addition, this unit introduces Khmer arts, culture, language, and religion. Lesson plans will evaluate the characteristics of Cambodian history and culture.

Genocide in Cambodia

This area of study includes lessons on the causes and events of the genocide in Cambodia including efforts to bring about justice for genocide survivors.

Cambodian Diaspora

This area of study examines the experiences of Cambodian refugees who escaped Cambodia following the Civil War, the mass killings during the Khmer Rouge, and the Vietnamese occupation. Lessons explore the Cambodian diasporas and refugee experiences

Community Building and Healing

This area of study explores the ways Cambodians build community and live in the United States. Lesson plans will engage sources which help students understand the possible effects of historical trauma and its impact on younger generations of Cambodian Americans. Lesson plans will allow students to explore the opportunities and challenges of life in the United States through oral histories on resiliency, culture, and community healing.
