The "boat people" of Vietnam risked everything to escape Communist control

Separation and Vietnamese Refugees

Students will be able to connect themes of emotion to the separation and loss experienced by the Vietnamese refugee community through an analysis of music and a short response.

Music Study of Republic of Vietnam from 1955-1962

HSS 11.9, W.11-12.3, RL.11-12.4

Students will describe the social life of the Vietnamese in exile and during the Vietnam War by analyzing three songs from major Vietnamese song composers and creating a modern day playlist.

A unique, live performance mixing spoken word by Tou Saiko Lee, and traditional music sung by his grandma, Youa Chang.

Hmong Worldview through Oral Traditions

RL.11-12.4, W.11-12.4, WL.CN2.N: Diverse Perspectives and Distinctive Viewpoints

Students will explore Hmong worldview through the oral traditions of Hmong proverbs (paj lug) and Hmong poetry songs (kwv txhia/lug txhaj). Students will analyze various examples of paj lug and learn the different themes and components that make up a kwv txhiaj and create their own.

What’s in a Name?

Students will have a better understanding of the story behind their name and be able to describe themselves and their various intersecting identities.

Students will be able to define generational trauma and link past Cambodian American experiences to generational trauma.
