Students will analyze different Vietnamese youth organizations centered around cultural preservation and create a fictional Vietnamese American event to illustrate their takeaways.
War displaces people from their homes and transforms communities all over the world. This lesson is the introduction of two lessons that focus on war and home. Students will learn about the historical context of Hmong involvement and experience during the US’s Secret War in Laos to explore how war affects people’s concept of home.
Students will examine the early stages of Vietnam’s history and analyze its development as an empire leading up to colonization by the French by creating a synthesis timeline.
Students will listen to music as sociopolitical testimonies to analyze genocide—not only as physical violence, but also structural and cultural violence on a whole community.
Students will interact and critically analyze texts on Cambodian food as it pertains to memory and identity.
Students will be able to recognize, understand, and discuss the negative consequences of military decisions in other countries.
