Students will be able to identify the shifting attitudes and emotional experiences of Vietnamese people during the Vietnam War by analyzing various historical events, films, and artistic expressions to create a poster.
Students will be able to describe the cultural attitudes and visions of the Vietnamese American refugee community that stem from the early stages of the Republic of Vietnam by analyzing literary and musical text and producing a medium of choice.
Students will critically analyze narratives about the Republic of Vietnam and its people portrayed through US and Vietnamese media, music, and film and evaluate how these narratives influence representation and identity-building in the Vietnamese American community in a graphic organizer.
Students will be able to analyze the intricate historical context of Vietnam between 1946-1954 and engage in a debate aimed to critically analyze different perspectives on the formation and governance of Vietnam.
Students will examine the early stages of Vietnam’s history and analyze its development as an empire leading up to colonization by the French by creating a synthesis timeline.
After students learn about the Cambodian Genocide and how it was carried out, students will now learn about the strength and perseverance of the Cambodian people’s fight against continued displacement. Students will explore Cambodian displacement in Boeung Kak Lake, its connection to human rights violations, and the agency and resistance of the Cambodian people to fight displacement.
Students will gain an understanding of the impact of the Cambodian Genocide on its survivors and will examine possible approaches toward justice and peace.
Students will learn about the history and impact of the Cambodian genocide in general, and the experiences of musician, activist, and survivor Daran Kravanh in particular. In doing so, they will consider how musical activities (including both listening and performing) can bring us closer to the people and world around us.
Describe the impact of French colonialism on Vietnamese literature and music by comparing and contrasting two well known poets and their work.
