Students will be able to analyze the complexities of the Geneva Accords of 1954 and the North-South migration in Vietnam by examining primary sources, engaging in group discussions, and analyzing a song.
Students will learn about Hmong refugee experiences and the ongoing impacts on community formation, family relations, and individual identity formation in connection to mental health.
Students will learn about the different kinds of sponsorship and approaches to integrating Hmong refugees into various communities in the United States. Students will generate an inquiry to discuss the issues around religious sponsorships and its impact on Hmong religious beliefs.
Students will review the policies of refugee camps and resettlement and its impacts on the Hmong refugee experiences.
Students will get an overview of the refugee policies that impacted refugees rights and status. Students will generate an inquiry to discuss the issues around the US Refugee Resettlement Programs and its impact on migration and settlement patterns to the United States and other parts of the world.
Students will explore traditional Hmong musical instruments and learn about the purpose of each instrument and the instrument’s relationship to Hmong histories and communities.
Students will consider and analyze the aftermath of the Cambodian displacement and immigration experience. Students will analyze photographs as well as poetry on the experiences of Cambodian refugees with focus on initial challenges as well as long term effects.
Students will investigate the connections between Cambodian American history, culture, and art/music. By analyzing a song's text, they'll examine its connection to war and the Cambodian genocide. Students will also evaluate the ongoing role of music in Cambodian American culture and reflect on its potential impact in their own lives.
