By analyzing the language of the United Nations Genocide Convention and the international definition of genocide, students will assess the significance and impacts of the genocide label, and evaluate how well the UN's definition captures the complexities of the Cambodian Genocide.
Through learning about attempts at bringing justice to those responsible for the Cambodian Genocide, students will learn about judicial systems and their ability to help prevent further crimes against humanity and hold people accountable for committing crimes against humanity. Students will determine the effectiveness of the ECCC in bringing about justice.
Change is driven by multiple causes, and results in multiple consequences. These create a complex web of interrelated short-term and long-term causes and consequences. Students will consider how the Cambodian Genocide evolved in relation to the 10 Stages of Genocide to see how each action led to short-term and long-term consequences.
