Students will be able to identify and describe the changes in Vietnamese family dynamics along the acculturation process by engaging in a jigsaw activity and creating an identity collage.
Students will be able to analyze and reflect on the psychological experiences of Vietnamese refugees during their resettlement process by interacting with various excerpts from "House of Sticks: A Memoir.” (Simon and Schuster) and creating a medium of choice.
Students will be able to trace and identify the origins of Hmong cuisine and community hubs in the United States through an exploration of diverse sources. They will connect these elements to the refugee experience and express their understanding by creating a personalized lunch box identity collage.
There are many success stories of Hmong individuals creating and making an impact in their communities. Students will research a Hmong individual and share what impacts that individual has on the Hmong community and the broader US community by producing a written or visual product of their selected individual.
Students will be able to analyze the complexities of the Geneva Accords of 1954 and the North-South migration in Vietnam by examining primary sources, engaging in group discussions, and analyzing a song.
Students will analyze sources to understand the political, social, and economical consequences of the Genocide and how they constitute a human right violation from the UNHRC perspective.
Students will learn from first-hand accounts of the chemical warfare that occurred after the Secret War and how it impacted Hmong people. Students will have the opportunity to weigh in and decide for themselves whether the struggles the Hmong people faced can be considered a genocide.
After students learn about what the Cold War is and how it was carried out in Southeast Asia through the Vietnam War, students will analyze the Secret War that took place in Laos, the role that Hmong played, and the impact it had on Hmong people.
Through analyzing primary sources and historical documents, students will learn about the ‘Secret War’ in Laos in which Laotian civilians and the Royal Lao Army special forces, known as the ‘Special Guerrilla Units,’ supported the American covert war efforts in Laos. Students will share their viewpoints about secret bombings and US’s involvement in collaborative activities and a Four Corner Discussion.
Students will learn why people seek refuge, understand what refugee camps are like and where they were for Cambodian refugees after 1975, grasp how resettlement impacts refugees and their places of refuge, and differentiate between asylum seekers and refugees.
