    Lesson Overview

This lesson is about the Wintu Tribe of Northern California, in Shasta County. Students will learn about the Wintus’ use of natural resources in everyday life, practice relaxation techniques to increase focus and apply their own creativity in assembling natural materials/found objects to create a miniature home.

The Wintu Tribe of Northern California is a non-federally recognized group headquartered in Shasta County. Multiple bands of Wintu people live in Northern California, with unique cultures and leadership. A “band” is a small kin-based group that functions as a social and political unit.

The Wintu people are experts in using the natural resources around them in order to live and thrive.  They use the resources around them for food, shelter, tools, and weapons.  This lesson introduces students to a variety of these resources and encourages students to be creative in their use of natural materials.

In addition to the downloadable lesson and student handouts, this mini unit comprised of 60 minutes (1-4 class sessions), includes interactive slides and lesson script/ facilitation support.
