Students will be able to identify and describe the effects of the Vietnam War on the mental health of first generation Vietnamese Americans by engaging in a gallery walk activity to analyze various excerpts of “House of Sticks: A Memoir.”
Students will be able to trace the genealogy of the stereotypes to gang influence and other socio-cultural environmental factors that Vietnamese American youth in the postwar generation faced (in the late 1990s through early 2000s) by analyzing various multimedia sources and drawing connections with their own identity and experiences in a personal free verse reflection.
Students will identify key factors that fostered Vietnamese refugees’ participation in the nail industry by analyzing segments of media clips and creating a zine.
Students will be able to describe the evolution of Vietnamese music by examining two of the biggest music entertainment companies (Paris By Night and Asia Entertainment) and engaging in an oral discussion activity.
Students will be able to identify patterns of community building and settlement of Vietnamese refugees in America by participating in a jigsaw activity and completing an exit ticket.
Students will be able to make inferences about the daily life of Vietnamese War refugees in various camps (including Camp Pendleton, Hong Kong, and Fort Chaffee) by observing photos and producing a medium of choice.
After defining the characteristics of American business industries and how they came to be, students will research successful Hmong contributions that either provide continuity or change in various industries and what effects this contribution can have on society.
