Native American Studies, Cambodian American Studies, Hmong History and Cultural Studies, and Vietnamese American Experiences Model Curricula for K-12 Schools
Students will be able to trace the motivations of Vietnamese refugee migration to Texas and the Gulf Coast, identify the local responses to refugee resettlement in Seadrift, Seabrook, Rockport, and other small coastal communities in Texas and impacts of racial conflict by answering text dependent questions and creating a medium of choice.
Students will be able to connect anti-Vietnamese attitudes surrounding the passage of the Refugee Act of 1980 and the Orderly Departure Program with anti-immigrant and anti-refugee attitudes that continue to persist in American society today by creating a poster.
Students will identify reasons prompting Vietnamese refugees to risk their lives to flee their homeland by interacting with various sources and creating a reflective medium of choice.
Students will be able to evaluate the impacts of departure and resettlement experiences on Vietnamese Amerasians post-war by analyzing various sources and constructing proposed amendments.
Students will be able to identify and describe post-war communist policies regarding re-education, its connection to why Vietnamese refugees fled Vietnam, and explain how these policies affect the personal experiences of Vietnamese Americans by interacting with sources and creating a slide presentation.
Students will be able to connect themes of emotion to the separation and loss experienced by the Vietnamese refugee community through an analysis of music and a short response.
Students will be able to describe the challenges and hardships experienced by the Vietnamese people from life at the “re-education” camps by participating in a World Cafe discussion and completing a fictional journal entry.
Students will be able to summarize the experiences of the second wave of Vietnamese refugees (boat people) and identify major plot elements in the digital story, “The Boat” by Nam Lê and Matt Huynh by answering text dependent questions and completing a plot elements diagram.
Students will be able to describe the challenges and hardships experienced by the Vietnamese people trying to escape by boat by interacting with a variety of sources in a jigsaw activity and completing a reflection.
Students will compare and contrast the various refugee camps in Asia (Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Macau, Singapore, and Japan) by gathering notes from a variety of sources and sharing their understanding in a medium of choice.
Students will be able to reflect on and summarize the experiences of the boat journey for the second wave of Vietnamese refugees by participating in a graffiti activity and producing an exit ticket.
Students will be able to identify difficulties and obstacles faced by refugees at the refugee camps by analyzing sources and creating a medium of choice.
Students will be able to describe the life experiences of migrants along refugee camps (Clark Air Force Base, Philippines and Anderson Air Force Base, Guam) and evaluate the overall experience of the refugees in these base camps by completing a graphic organizer.
Students will summarize the cause and effects of Vietnamese refugee migration on both the Vietnamese and local US communities at Camp Pendleton by analyzing primary sources and completing a Visual Primary Source Analysis Tool.
Students will be able to make inferences about the daily life of Vietnamese War refugees in various camps (including Camp Pendleton, Hong Kong, and Fort Chaffee) by observing photos and producing a medium of choice.
Students will identify and describe the varied experiences and memories leading up to the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, by analyzing oral history interviews and creating a medium of choice.
Students will synthesize resettlement patterns of Vietnamese refugees from 1980–1990 by analyzing reports and completing a written reflection and participating in a peer discussion.
Students will be able to identify the shifting attitudes and emotional experiences of Vietnamese people during the Vietnam War by analyzing various historical events, films, and artistic expressions to create a poster.
Students will describe the social life of the Vietnamese in exile and during the Vietnam War by analyzing three songs from major Vietnamese song composers and creating a modern day playlist.
