The purpose of this lesson is to highlight culture, specifically the language, that is not commonly known within the Cambodian diaspora. Students will learn more and understand what Khmer language is, where it comes from, its evolution to what it is today.
Students will discover how mythology and language contributed to the development of the names Khmer and Cambodia by engaging in a character evaluation.
Describe the impact of French colonialism on Vietnamese literature and music by comparing and contrasting two well known poets and their work.
Trace and explain the causes and consequences of French colonialism of Vietnam from 1858-1940 by gathering information in primary sources to write a short response.
Identify and/or describe the changes in Vietnamese family dynamic as the new immigrant/refugee families adjust to the new life, how the Vietnamese families and community respond to the changes, and develop a general understanding of expected changes among immigrant/refugee groups as they acculturate into the new life. The lesson also addresses the ways in which culture and language is sustained within the family unit as they navigate through acculturation into American society.
Students will understand the importance of preserving global heritage sites to preserve cultural identity in Cambodia.
