Experiences of Vietnamese Women

Students will compare and contrast the identities of Vietnamese women from the past to present by analyzing sources and creating visual representations. In doing so, they will find how some gender roles have evolved, while other factors have remained consistent.

The temple’s design mimics those built in Vietnam, and combines many of the characteristics of Catholic cathedrals (such as a nave and apse) with the nine ascending levels of Buddhist pagodas, as well as aspects of the religious architecture associated with Taoism and ancestral temples.

Religion in Vietnamese American Communities

Students will analyze the role of religion in shaping Vietnamese American communities, specifically focusing on its impact on community activism, cultural preservation, and intergenerational relationships, by interacting with various text and video sources and creating a poster.

Vietnamese Refugee Stories and Music: Mini-Project

HSS 11.9, RI.11-12.7, W.11-12.6, SL.11-12.5

Students will be able to analyze and interpret the historical and personal significance of the Vietnamese refugee experience by examining song lyrics and biographies of composers related to the refugee experience, as well as engaging in a several-week project that involves research, discussion, script-writing, video production, technology application, and a final presentation.

Vietnamese Refugee Laws

Students will be able to connect anti-Vietnamese attitudes surrounding the passage of the Refugee Act of 1980 and the Orderly Departure Program with anti-immigrant and anti-refugee attitudes that continue to persist in American society today by creating a poster.
